How to Draw Graffiti for Beginners

Begin with ordinary letter structure

Write the word in simple capital letters first. Check that every character is recognizable and that the spacing feels even. Graffiti style works best when it grows from a structure you can still see underneath.

Short words are easier to study because each letter has room to change shape. Use a pencil or the free editor to compare block and bubble directions before committing to detail.

Build one consistent silhouette

Increase the weight of every letter using the same basic rule. Rounded letters can inflate outward, while angular letters can gain wider stems and sharper corners.

Look at the outside edge of the full word. A strong silhouette should feel intentional even before color, arrows, highlights, or shadows are added.

Add outline and depth in order

Draw the first outline close to the letters. Then choose one shadow direction and apply it consistently across the word. Random depth directions make separate letters feel disconnected.

Use color to improve recognition
